Rote Island is a remote location yet with plenty to do. The wellbeing of ourguests matters to us. For this reason, Manduna Resort has a list of recommendations before you arrive
Weather
Rote has 2 seasons, the dry season (April -October) and the rainy season (November – March). The climate is tropical, hot all year round. During the rainy season the winds turn offshore on the main breaks but there is still all the other side of the island with offshore winds to explore. It usually rains a couple hours in the morning and afternoon with sun breaks in between.
Sea water is warm enough to swim throughout the year with water temperatures ranging from 27 to 30celsius [81-86f]
Staying connected
Although Manduna offers Wi-Fi in the public it is convenient to stay connected at all times especially when you are outside the resort exploring the island. You can either set-up a Data Roaming plan in your country of origin or like most guests do buy a SIM card from TELKOMSEL which is the only operator that works on Rote Island. It is possible then to Top-up the card in Rote if necessary but not possible to buy the SIM card there.
Money
There are no Money Changers in Rote so we recommend changing enough cash at your point of departure. There is an ATM close to Manduna where you can withdraw cash if needed.
Big surfboards and over-sized luggage
On the flight from Kupang to Rote, WingsAir at times has restrictionson the size and weight of luggage as the aircraft is an ATR72 which is a smaller twin-propeller aircraft but very safe and reliable that fits 60pax.
They limit the luggage weight to 30kgs/pax and for surfboards/bags they may not allow bigger than 6’4/6’6 but sometimes they don’t have a problem so it’s hard to say. It all depends on how full is the flight and how many bags have been checked-in before you. Wings Air usually charges 200.000idr/board for the flight.
If you plan to bring ‘big Boards/bags’ please let us know in advance and we will arrange for our Concierge in Kupang to meet you at the airport and help your check-in to your Kupang-Rote flight.
If there is any problem with boards or luggage our concierge will be there at the airport to collect the bags/boards and will send it by ferry the next morning. We have at Manduna a good quiver of quality boards to get you surfing while you wait for your equipment to arrive.
The cost of oversize luggage and big board bags in the Ferry is $55/way for a bag with max 2 boards and that includes concierge help at the airport, collection of surfboards/luggage and deliver to Ferry, Ferry porter and ferry cost, Pick-up at Rote port and transfer to Manduna Resort to your room.
Please note that the ferry runs subject to weather and sea conditions and Manduna is not responsible for any delays on the arrival of your boards/bags. There are also 2 surf shops in Rote that do rent some good quality boards being a great alternative to all the hassles and costs involvedin bringing your own boards.
